University and Hanseatic City of Greifswald

In the northeast of Germany, between the two largest German islands of Rügen and Usedom, the versatile university and Hanseatic city of Greifswald is located.

Cistercian monks founded the Hilda Monastery in 1199, which can still be visited as a ruin in Eldena today. In 1250 the Duke Wartislaw III. the settlement of Lübische Law and raised the settlement to the city. Greifswald experienced an economic upswing in the Middle Ages through membership in the Hanseatic League. Today the city is a modern and important economic, science and technology location.

Cultural

The three large parish churches - Sankt Marien, the cathedral of Sankt Nikolai and the Jacobikirche - are impressive witnesses from the time of brick architecture. If you visit the university and Hanseatic city from the north, the silhouette of the city from Caspar David Friedrich's perspective shows how it can be seen on his paintings. Pictures of the famous painter of the city are exhibited in the Gemäldegalerie of the Pomeranian State Museum. In the historic old town area with its Gothic gable houses on the market and the Sankt Spiritus, which is culturally used today, is the main building of the university with the auditorium and the karz. Visits are possible after prior registration.
 
Many well-attached cycle and hiking trails offer the opportunity to individually explore the University and Hanseatic City of Greifswald and its surroundings. In the summer months it gets culturally: for example, with jazz evenings in the Eldena monastery ruins and at concerts in the cathedral as part of the Bach Week.

Wieck & Eldena

The listed fishing village of Wieck is located directly on the Greifswald Bodden. Maritime flair and coastal romance await you here.

A special attraction in Wieck is the hundred years of wooden train bridge. Built according to the Dutch model, it is still fully functional today. The idyllic port offers space for many ships. Here is also the berth of the Schonerbrigg »Greif«, which was built in 1951 in Rostock-Warnemünde from Stahl. On board the sailing school ship is an extensive chronicle that provides information about the history of the ship and its crew.

Experience maritime flair from yesterday and today: the Fischerfest Gaffeligg takes place every year on the third weekend in July. In addition to the Hanse Sail, the Fischerfest in Wieck is the largest Maritime folk festival in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Colorful cafes and restaurants offer the guests in Wieck a place to relax and invite them to regional culinary delights. A walk past the many thatched houses with a view of the Greifswalder Bodden is worthwhile in any case.

And right next to Wieck is the Greifswald city beach in Eldena. Here you can relax on sunny days and enjoy the wonderful weather.
