Freester fishing carpets
Freester fishing carpets testify to a unique and almost lost handicrafts with moving history, which you should definitely get to the bottom of your Baltic Sea vacation. In 2023, the design and traditionally manual production of the Vorpommers fishing carpets from UNESCO were recognized as an intangible cultural heritage.
When a fishing ban was imposed on the southern Baltic Sea in 1928, the fishermen stood in the Vorpommers' coastal villages without source of income. The then District Administrator Werner Kogge came up with the idea of simply having the fishermen another craft - according to the motto: If you can build nets, you can also make carpets by native newspaper advertisement someone who could teach the fishermen's craft. With the Austrian Rudolf Stundl, there was a real strange for the fishermen in the region. He quickly understood that the fishermen would be unsuccessful if they were simply copying the known motifs of the oriental carpets. Together with them, he developed a very special knotting technique and unique patterns and symbols based on the coastal regions of Western Pomerania. An independent craft developed and established itself, so that it continued to live after the fishing ban on the fishing ban and lasted production until 1992.
Since the production cooperative "Folk Art on the Baltic Sea" was closed, the carpets have only been made privately. Collections of the carpets can be admired in the Heimatmuseum Freest, in the city history museum of the city of Wolgast and in the custody of the University of Greifswald. You should definitely admire this collection at the next Baltic Sea vacation.
