Of course romantic: romance in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

Significant representatives of German painting, literature and music found inspiring landscapes here, the necessary calm and formative friendships. In particular, the region at Greifswald Bodden is considered the home port of romanticism.

A sunset in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania invites you to relax and take a deep breath. Well -known artists came to this pleasure 200 years ago. With these fascinating conditions of light and shadow in nature, the painters had to reach for the tool and start with the creation process of new works. The most famous representative of German early romanticism is Caspar David Friedrich, who wanted to come back to nature and himself and thus made Western Pomerania the place of pilgrimage of North German romance. And although he had to leave his homeland in order to be able to sell himself and his own art, he carried the domestic colors and light with himself and transported it into his works. The romantics Philipp Otto Runge, Friedrich August von Klinkowström, Georg Friedrich Kersting or Karl Gottlieb Lappe are also well -known sons of the region.

anniversary

In 2024, the University and Hanseatic City of Greifswald celebrated Caspar David Friedrich's 250th birthday. Numerous exhibitions, events and projects took place as part of the anniversary year.

Places of romance

Original locations of these famous artists can be found throughout Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The chalk cliffs and the idyllic landscapes of Rügen, but also the cities of Neubrandenburg and Güstrow are just a few examples of these original locations.

"There is an incredible light here and you have the flat landscape with the high sky, the 'Friedrichhimmel' - wide, violet or red."
- Dr. Birte Frenssen, art historian and curator at the Pomeranian State Museum in Greifswald

Events related to romance

Some important veters are praised annually. For example, there is the annual event " A day with Caspar David Friedrich" , which was introduced in honor of the most famous son of the Hanse and University City of Greifswald. At Ludwigsburg Castle, on the other hand, the Ludwigsburg Klinkowström day celebrated for the first time in honor of another representative of the romantic era.

In some cases, however, the topic also plays an important role in the annual autumn. In October, selected houses open their doors and welcome the visiting with numerous events, tours and cultural highlights, among other things, on the subject of romance!
