Places of romance

As early as the first decade of the 19th century, today's Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania enjoyed great popularity among many artists. For some romantics, such as Caspar David Friedrich, Philipp Otto Runge, Friedrich August von Klinkowström and Georg Friedrich Kersting, the north was home and was also a source of artistic inspiration. They were all fascinated by the wide original landscape of the north, which became world famous through their works.

In the footsteps of Caspar David Friedrich & Co.

Even today, the traces of the big painters and the original locations of their pictures can be discovered in many places. The most popular places include the chalk cliffs on Rügen, the meadows near Greifswald, the still medieval architecture of Neubrandenburg, impressive gun graves, old oaks and the sea.

Rügen's romantic chalk coast with the famous view from the Königsstuhl already impressed painters, poets and thinkers. White bizarre chalk cliffs, the turquoise -colored Baltic Sea and rustic old beech forests offer all romantics a fantastic backdrop and a unique view.

The Caspar-David-Friedrich-Bildweg leads with 15 stations from the old town of Greifswald along the Ryck river to the Bodden to the Eldena monastery ruins. It contains viewpoints that Friedrich chose and leads along important places of action as motives for his works. These include his birthplace, today's Caspar-David-Friedrich-Zentrum, the St. Nikolai cathedral as the baptismal church of the painter and the Pomeranian State Museum, which shows originals in Friedrich in its painting gallery.

The Güstrow City Museum has a unique Kersting painting collection. These include an early work by the artist from his Copenhagen study time "Parking landscape with source", his only late work "The Loreley", the interior picture "Frau am Spinnrad and drumbube with sabers" as well as the attractive genre "children at the open window".
